I’m now a Featured Entertainer for Happier Hour at Bogie’s Night Club at the Westlake Village Inn so that means that once a month I’ll be performing both solo and with my friends.

Paula will join me on vocals, Guitarists Dave Heroux and Alex Ferman will often be there and so may other singers, guitarists and fun-loving people. Make sure you are one of them!

My show is considered an Acoustic Jam Night at Bogie’s. If you have a song in your heart, a guitar in your hand or just want to perform some ReBoomer Folk Rock Music, please come and join me. 5:30-7:30 as usual.

If there’s a program or dinner you’re attending later that evening, you’ll still have time for that event or other plans after the music. So drop in for a little fun but please plan to join us to make some music and, if you wish, stay for dinner too. If you want to check out Bogie’s great new 9 page menu, just go to the link above and explore a bit. It’s all there. And if you drop me a note to tell me you’re coming I’ll happily notify Bogie’s, send them any requests you have re: their menu.

Also, posted below is my song list so that you can; request the ones you want me to play, look up songs on YouTube in advance (if you want to review the lyrics in order to sing along), or just review the list in the article below to know what to expect. You can text the word “songs” to 86677 and you’ll get a link to the song list.

Email me please to let us know you’re coming, and so that Bogie’s can have the servers we will need: jim@cathcart.com.

Bogie’s requested a guesstimate of how many will come so they can staff accordingly. Just drop me a quick text or email.

We will be indoors on the Lounge Stage again. So the sound will be great as will the temperature control.

On April 27th I’ll be leading a group discussion at Sherwood Country Club

(Member & guest event)

The subject is Storytelling. We will be talking about:

How to tell Stories like professional storytellers

Becoming the characters in your Stories

Using Stories to teach, motivate, lead, and entertain

Parenting with Stories

Classic examples of Story structure

Using Humor in Stories

How to determine the length, style, and structure of a Story you use

Where to learn Storytelling

As a professional speaker for 34 years now, I’ve delivered speeches and seminars before 2,700 audiences around the world. My listeners have been business people, civic leaders, sales people, military leaders, educators, financial experts, astronauts, scientists, youth, government workers, funeral directors, musicians, actors, cruise ship officers, media personalities, authors and playwrights.

I have not only used Stories in all of my presentations; I’ve also known, observed and been trained by professional performers, directors, authors and coaches. We can explore the many varied approaches to using Stories in your life and business. So please join me if you are a member or guest of a member of Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, California. Call the concierge at Sherwood to reserve your spot. (We can only accomodate about 30 people so act now!)

Discussion Salons – Parlor Events

Since 2002 I have been hosting a series of Parlor Discussions at Sherwood Country Club. These are living room setting, open discussions in a casual atmosphere, among up to 30 participants, usually from 5:30 to 7:30pm so that dinner plans can still be made afterwards. I’ve invited a fascinating line-up of guests to join these “Salons”. Guests have included: Astronauts, Philosophers, Authors, Psychologists, Business Leaders, Comedians, Musicians, Entertainers, Civic Leaders, Writers, Motivational Experts, and Law Professors. Topics are presented by the guest for a few minutes and then I facilitate an open discussion involving everyone. All agree that these are inspiring, refreshing and fascinating. These opportunities to get up close and personal with the guests provide a substantial value to all who attend. Many join us for a dutch-treat group dinner after the event at the Sherwood Tennis Dining Room, to continue the dialogue.

Take a look around you and you’ll see lots of silver hair in the workplace. It turns out that the Baby Boom (78 million people born in the USA between 1946 and 1964) is not choosing to “retire” as their parents did. Between 8,000 and 10,000 of us boomers are turning 65 every day between January of 2011 and 2029. Let that thought sink in for a moment.

Retirement isn’t what I thought it would be.

We all grew up expecting to be retired by 65 and hunting, fishing, golfing, knitting, gardening or doing volunteer work at the church or hospital. Our parents’ generation were worn out at 65. They were wrinkled, bent, portly (or “matronly”) and didn’t get out as much anymore. Their homes were paid for, retirement accounts fully funded and the kids were grown and married. Their life expectancy was just over 70 years and they were winding down.

Now let’s give them some credit though. They are “The Greatest Generation” as Tom Brokaw said. They fought World War II, survived the Great Depression, built the interstate highway system, discovered wondrous new technologies and machines that made life better for us, and they raised us, all 78 million of us. No wonder they were tired!

They worked at the same company for their entire career and saved money, paid their bills on time, took care of their own yard and home, helped their neighbors, obeyed the laws and didn’t make much noise. They (compared to us) were a very well-behaved generation. Then we came along.

We Boomers did just that “boomed”. We even created a device called “The Boom Box” to play our music for everyone instead of just ourselves. We were raised to believe that everything was possible and our parents had made life pretty easy for most of us. We lived near our schools so the walk was short. We rode in car pools, took music and dance lessons, didn’t have many chores to do, and we went to movies. We got a bit out of line in our teens and early twenties. At the age when our parents were saving the world via World War II we were tuning in, turning on, dropping out, going to concerts, and burning draft cards…and bras. We fought in Vietnam, a very different experience from WWII. And we got used to the idea that we could have our own sweet way if we just demanded it enough.

When we grew up we invented the World Wide Web, Apple, Microsoft, Rock & Roll and Flat Screen TVs. We also over mortgaged our homes and used credit cards instead of savings accounts. On the other hand, we started the fitness craze that changed people’s health habits. We outlawed smoking in public places and now that we are turning 65 we don’t look old yet. Hmmm. If I don’t “look” old, then I’m probably not old yet, we concluded.

Plus, we always believed that there was more out there waiting for us. More fun, more breakthroughs, better ways, new friends…. So, at “retirement” age we have no desire to slow down. We just change lanes.

We are no longer the Boomers, now we have become the RE-Boomers! We are starting a Silver Generation like the world has never seen. “Grandpa bought a Porsche!” “Gramma just went skydiving!” We say things like, “Son, I’ve decided to start a new business. Mom and I will be moving to Texas and opening that restaurant I always dreamed about.” or “Sweetie, Dad and I want to drop by and show you the new business we are in. Get a sitter and leave an hour for all of us to discuss the opportunities.”

Check your own neighborhood at work and at home. Notice how many silver haired servers there are in your favorite restaurant, older clerks at the store, advisors and service reps with “seniority.” The Re-Boom is upon us.

This presents a HUGE opportunity to businesses and schools. With so many truly experienced and well educated seniors who are still eager to work, you should have no trouble staffing for your opportunities! Yes, they will need better health benefits than youth would, but they won’t need as much coaching to behave in a mature and professional manner. They will also bring you the wisdom gained from their entire career before you. Listen to them more than you have to your younger coworkers and you will learn some valuable insights.

Stay tuned here and on Cathcart.com and I’ll bring you more insights into how you can benefit from the Re-Boomer Generation.

Since we were formed in 2002, 101 Leaders has operated under an assortment of names: “The 101 Leaders Summit, The 101 Leaders Institute, and The 101 Leaders Alliance.”

This past week we were contacted by the folks who own the trademark for “The Leaders Institute®” Their legal team felt that our use of the phrase “Leaders Institute” infringed on their trademark and they asked us to drop it. After, as you’d expect, much discussion we decided to do so. Despite the fact that we have been using that name for 8 years it just made better sense to shift our name that challenge the trademark.

In the future, our official name will be “The 101 Leaders Alliance” which is a name we currently use as part of our overall corporation Cathcart Institute, Inc. So, if you see any of our materials with Institute instead of Alliance, please don’t be confused, it is still us. We are just in process with the changeover. Our logos and printed materials will be changed in the next cycle of printing, so there will still be some
“Institute” overlap.

The plans for The 101 Leaders in the coming year include: Seminars, Coaching, Webinars, Radio Shows, Podcasts, Articles, Speeches, Special Appearances, Discussion Groups and Parlor “Salon” discussions. If you need our help in developing the “Get Things Done” skills of your team, please contact us and let’s “git ‘er done” as Larry The Cable Guy® says.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and may your 2011 be a Prosperous and Meaningful Year!

In the Spirit of Growth,

Terence had invited me to dinner at a very upscale restaurant in Brisbane and I was excited to sample their “Moreton Bay Bugs” (Lobster). Once we were seated he received a phone call and proceeded to conduct business on his cell phone for the next 20 minutes, completely ignoring his wife and me. People at neighboring tables were giving him, and us, hard looks of disapproval, but Terence was oblivious, just wheeling and dealing as we sat with hunger and frustration growing apace. He felt he was doing what was important, and we felt offended and ignored.

That was almost 20 years ago in Australia and cell phones were called “mobile phones”. The protocol of using or not using them had not yet evolved and people felt compelled to use them when they rang. Terence had no idea that he was doing anything wrong, he was just using the available tools to do what needed to be done. But did he make a good choice?

Well times have changed. Now everyone has a cell phone, all of them have voice mail, email and a mute button, and most establishments have posted policies about their use. The iPad is the new “mobile phone” of today. It is still a novelty to most people and it’s fun to explore what it will do. The whole world has opened up to us, instantly. Last night I was watching a TV broadcast of a ballgame while sitting by the pool with my grandkids splashing nearby. Luckily I had the presence of mind and good taste to turn off the game and enjoy the water sports in front of me. But many people do not turn it off…ever.

My wife just now told my grandson to put down his “DS” player and join his sister in watching a TV program. She said, “You play that game so much I’m afraid your thumbs will fall off!” I added, “And I’ll have to pick them up because you will only have four fingers.” Of course, all parties knew that we were joking. But look at the bigger picture. Stop playing a digital game in order to watch a TV show? That’s just changing media. Is watching a TV show with someone really a form of social interaction? Do we really advance by just ingesting information or entertainment?

Clearly human interaction (with other humans) is the key to societal advancement. Our media must be the medium for something more than data. People are not loyal to nor in love with facts. So, when should we stash the iPad, ignore the emails, turn off the TV, mute the phone or, dare I suggest, not even take it with us? How does one make such a decision?

Here’s the reality for many of us: Your boss expects you to be on call 24/7. The company expects you to give people a call back within 20 minutes, no exceptions. The client is impatient with any delays and quickly turns to another supplier if you are slow to respond. The news is being broadcast all day long and you’re expected to “keep up” with what’s going on (as if that’s possible.) After all, your website is responsive 100% of the time, why shouldn’t you be equally accessible? No.

If you are a “server” for your system or business what happens when the server is down? Think about this; mechanical servers occasionally have to be shut down or taken offline in order to be upgraded or replaced. The same is true for people. You NEED times when you are not connected, when reaching you might take, say a few hours instead of under 20 minutes. Without time to simply be human, you become overly stressed and in danger of breakdown. Use your technology and enjoy the instant access world that we live in, but occasionally and on-purpose, leave the tools at home and just live your life. You’ll be worth more to others when you reconnect.
