Since we were formed in 2002, 101 Leaders has operated under an assortment of names: “The 101 Leaders Summit, The 101 Leaders Institute, and The 101 Leaders Alliance.”

This past week we were contacted by the folks who own the trademark for “The Leaders Institute®” Their legal team felt that our use of the phrase “Leaders Institute” infringed on their trademark and they asked us to drop it. After, as you’d expect, much discussion we decided to do so. Despite the fact that we have been using that name for 8 years it just made better sense to shift our name that challenge the trademark.

In the future, our official name will be “The 101 Leaders Alliance” which is a name we currently use as part of our overall corporation Cathcart Institute, Inc. So, if you see any of our materials with Institute instead of Alliance, please don’t be confused, it is still us. We are just in process with the changeover. Our logos and printed materials will be changed in the next cycle of printing, so there will still be some
“Institute” overlap.

The plans for The 101 Leaders in the coming year include: Seminars, Coaching, Webinars, Radio Shows, Podcasts, Articles, Speeches, Special Appearances, Discussion Groups and Parlor “Salon” discussions. If you need our help in developing the “Get Things Done” skills of your team, please contact us and let’s “git ‘er done” as Larry The Cable Guy® says.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and may your 2011 be a Prosperous and Meaningful Year!

In the Spirit of Growth,

Jim Cathcart

When to unplug & when to connect

by Motivation Expert, Jim Cathcart

Terence had invited me to dinner at a very upscale restaurant in Brisbane and I was excited to sample their “Moreton Bay Bugs” (Lobster). Once we were seated he received a phone call and proceeded to conduct business on his cell phone for the next 20 minutes, completely ignoring his wife and me. People at neighboring tables were giving him, and us, hard looks of disapproval, but Terence was oblivious, just wheeling and dealing as we sat with hunger and frustration growing apace. He felt he was doing what was important, and we felt offended and ignored.

That was almost 20 years ago in Australia and cell phones were called “mobile phones”. The protocol of using or not using them had not yet evolved and people felt compelled to use them when they rang. Terence had no idea that he was doing anything wrong, he was just using the available tools to do what needed to be done. But did he make a good choice?

Well times have changed. Now everyone has a cell phone, all of them have voice mail, email and a mute button, and most establishments have posted policies about their use. The iPad is the new “mobile phone” of today. It is still a novelty to most people and it’s fun to explore what it will do. The whole world has opened up to us, instantly. Last night I was watching a TV broadcast of a ballgame while sitting by the pool with my grandkids splashing nearby. Luckily I had the presence of mind and good taste to turn off the game and enjoy the water sports in front of me. But many people do not turn it off…ever.

My wife just now told my grandson to put down his “DS” player and join his sister in watching a TV program. She said, “You play that game so much I’m afraid your thumbs will fall off!” I added, “And I’ll have to pick them up because you will only have four fingers.” Of course, all parties knew that we were joking. But look at the bigger picture. Stop playing a digital game in order to watch a TV show? That’s just changing media. Is watching a TV show with someone really a form of social interaction? Do we really advance by just ingesting information or entertainment?

Clearly human interaction (with other humans) is the key to societal advancement. Our media must be the medium for something more than data. People are not loyal to nor in love with facts. So, when should we stash the iPad, ignore the emails, turn off the TV, mute the phone or, dare I suggest, not even take it with us? How does one make such a decision?

Here’s the reality for many of us: Your boss expects you to be on call 24/7. The company expects you to give people a call back within 20 minutes, no exceptions. The client is impatient with any delays and quickly turns to another supplier if you are slow to respond. The news is being broadcast all day long and you’re expected to “keep up” with what’s going on (as if that’s possible.) After all, your website is responsive 100% of the time, why shouldn’t you be equally accessible? No.

If you are a “server” for your system or business what happens when the server is down? Think about this; mechanical servers occasionally have to be shut down or taken offline in order to be upgraded or replaced. The same is true for people. You NEED times when you are not connected, when reaching you might take, say a few hours instead of under 20 minutes. Without time to simply be human, you become overly stressed and in danger of breakdown. Use your technology and enjoy the instant access world that we live in, but occasionally and on-purpose, leave the tools at home and just live your life. You’ll be worth more to others when you reconnect.

MotivationTV

MotivationTV is a channel I set up last year with some of my colleagues: Brian Tracy, Tony Alessandra & Sheila Murray Bethel in order to offer video training in a direct streaming format at a very low price. We uploaded some excellent training to this site and there are many links and freebies there as well.

Please take some time to explore this site. It is a special added-value item for 101 Leaders Alliance and I think you’ll enjoy it. Here is one of the videos to give you a sample of what’s there:

Another site you should know about is www.DailySuccessStream.com. This one used to be named iLearningGlobal.tv and it is amazing!

There are over one thousand video lessons in there. That’s right “One Thousand.” Each is a high-definition video of less than ten minutes (most are between 4 & 8 minutes long) and they are direct personal messages from the top motivational speakers and authors in the world. Now…pause for a second and let that last paragraph sink in.

It really is the most substantial video library of success how-to ever assembled. And it’s delivered in high-def and in bite sized pieces.

by Jim Cathcart, author Relationship Intelligence®, Relationship Selling, The Acorn Principle

Tuesday, June 15 from 9am to Noon

at the Westlake Village Inn professional speaker and author Jim Cathcart will be conducting a seminar on:

Turning contacts into Assets: Relationship Intelligence®.

This seminar will focus on how you can elevate all of your contacts into “Asset” status. Your life and your business is a series of relationships. The better you can choose relationships, cultivate and manage them, the more likely you will be to succeed.

This is NOT just about “people skills”. Instead this is a seminar about making conscious, intentional and strategic choices as to who and how you will connect.

Concepts in this seminar have come from my psychological research (that led to the publication of The Acorn Principle) and my consulting experience that resulted in the book and system known as Relationship Selling.

You will never again look at your relationships in the same limited ways that you did in the past.

Come and join me for this exciting 3 hour seminar on the morning of Tuesday, June 15th at the Westlake Village Inn. Enroll via this link: www.101Leaders.com.

Single enrollments are just $199. See you there! Email me at: jim@101Leaders.com

CONSIDER THIS:

How many ideas for product improvement, process enhancement, cost savings, waste reduction, safety improvement, new opportunities, and faster results are already there just waiting to be tapped? Put a dollar value on your estimate.

How many of your people bring attitudes to their work that literally cost you money and reduce your output? Just guess what the financial impact of that might be.

Which standard practices need to be replaced in order to open up new levels of success?

How many of the relationships in your organization are somewhat dysfunctional? What is that costing you in wasted opportunities and missed deadlines?

How much of your absenteeism and your employees’ healthcare claims can be attributed to bad relationships instead of actual illness?

How much does the “grief factor” in dealing with others take away from your people’s ability to perform at their best?

How many sales and good customers do you lose each year from wrong practices?

Where systems haven’t been put into place intentionally – work habits harden into systems anyway. What success-limiting habits exist within your workforce?

How many of your existing systems for marketing, service, production, problem solving, communications, cost control, and planning are working for you and how many of them are working against you?

What is your organization’s current reputation in the marketplace? How about among your coworkers and associates? Is that the reputation you intended to enjoy or would you like to see it evolve into something more ideal?

What does your current organizational reputation cost you each year compared to what it could be?

How loyal are your current customers and clients to you? How loyal are you to them?

How often have you lost business due to not knowing the inner relationships and personalities within your targeted client’s organizations? What is that costing you?

We all know that things that get measured tend to improve. If you keep a constant vigil on where your money comes from and where it goes to, then you will become better at managing your money…even without financial skills training.

Do you and your people have the right scoreboards prominently visible so that everyone can track what is working and what is not? What would it be worth to you if you always knew exactly where things stand?

As you discuss and explore questions like these you will begin to place a financial and strategic value on the ways in which people deal with each other. You will see that there is a direct financial impact felt from certain Attitudes, Skills and Habits. (Mindsets, Skill Sets and Systems.) These can each be improved through training and management practices that are targeted toward a specific Desired Outcome.

Every relationship has a value. Some low, some high. Some financial, some emotional, some social, etc. When you operate with a high level of “Relationship Intelligence ®”, you look at all of your relationships as assets and treat them as valuable items. Come, join me in this seminar to learn How To Convert Your Contacts Into Assets. Enroll now: email me at jim@101Leaders.com. Tuesday, June 15, 9am to noon, Westlake Village Inn.

by Jim Cathcart

Next event June 15, 2010 from 9am to noon at Westlake Village Inn, featuring Jim Cathcart on Relationship Intelligence®.

As expected Dr. Terry Paulson inspired and energized us last night at the 7th seminar in this Prosperity Series. His presentation on The Optimism Advantage clearly showed how we either become the product of “Learned Helplessness or Learned Optimism.” He also made the point that Optimists are realists who want the facts, not those who delude themselves with fantasy. The ONLY productive mindset is Optimism: there is a better way and we will seek it.

Optimists don’t give up prematurely, nor do they persist when the path is clearly unproductive. Optimists assume that they can learn from their mistakes and improve, so they don’t fear taking calculated risks. Optimists are constantly noticing what they did well and what needs improvement, but they emphasize the positives. (Pessimists dwell on the negatives instead of taking action.) Optimists have a bias toward action; they do something whenever they can.

I am strongly Optimistic about the future of the 101 Leaders Alliance. As I discussed with last night’s attendees, there are many new services on the table and plans are being formulated to make this Institute a compelling good value for you! Here are some of the items that are in the works. Please let us know your suggestions and hopes so that what we create is what you will truly want. Send an email to jim@101Leaders.com.

Bi-Monthly Seminars – Daytime

In our surveys of the members and guests at the 101 events there is a clear preference for daytime programming. Though we have occasionally offered our seminars in the evening, the majority of you find it easier to attend daytime programs. In the upcoming email surveys please let us know whether you can more easily attend AM programs (9 to 12) or afternoon programs (1:30 to 3:30). Our personal prediction is that the AM will work best for you, but let us know.

We have been operating on an 8 seminar schedule in this first year. But with the inclusion of more events for you we will slightly reduce the number of stand alone seminars to 6. You’ll get even more value because of the additional events and the seminars will be easier for you to work into your schedules. Current seminar months are targeted for January, March, May, June, September and November. This allows for summer sabbaticals and holiday events without scheduling conflicts.

Thought Leaders Forums – Quarterly

To give you a special opportunity to talk with other interesting people about the bigger ideas and more compelling issues, we plan to host a series of Thought Leaders Forums each year. Our first 101 Leaders event was such a meeting, we called it The 101 Leaders Summit. It was focused on stimulating leadership development throughout the 101 Corridor specifically among the non-profit community. Guests included Civic Leaders, the Deans of the schools of business at Pepperdine & Cal Lutheran Universities, VP of Cal State U Channel Islands, Ventura County Sheriff, President of the Ventura County Community Foundation, and many more. Details are here on this website under the Summit tab.

Next, we want to determine the most pressing big issues that are or will be affecting you so that we can design events that allow you to discuss and explore issues with the other leaders, business owners and influential people throughout the Corridor. Topics will vary and each event will be at an upscale venue worthy of the occasion.

Discussion Salons – Parlor Events

Since 2002 I have been hosting a series of Parlor Discussions at Sherwood Country Club. These are living room setting, open discussions in a casual atmosphere, among up to 30 participants, usually from 5:30 to 7:30pm so that dinner plans can still be made afterwards. I’ve invited a fascinating line-up of guests to join these “Salons”. Guests have included: Astronauts, Philosophers, Authors, Psychologists, Business Leaders, Comedians, Musicians, Entertainers, Civic Leaders, Writers, Motivational Experts, and Law Professors. Topics are presented by the guest for a few minutes and then I facilitate an open discussion involving everyone. All agree that these are inspiring, refreshing and fascinating. These opportunities to get up close and personal with the guests provide a substantial value to all who attend. Many join us for a group dinner after the event, to continue the dialogue.

By incorporating the Discussion Salons into the 101 Leaders mix, we will allow those who cannot attend the daytime seminars to still have access to our featured speakers and to gain even more direct input from them.

Mentor Sessions – 1 on 1 time

Over my 34 years as a professional speaker and author I’ve had many requests for one to one meetings. People often say, “I need an occasional dose of Cathcart optimism and objectivity.” So we schedule a private lunch or breakfast meeting or go for a hike to get some quiet time. This allows us to focus on what is important to you. Whether it’s just reassuring you that you are on the right path, or giving you a wake-up call/reality check to see what you’re missing, this can be immensely valuable. My goal is to be accessible to you in the ways that matter the most to you. So if you want to have me simply guide you as you think out loud. I’m happy to make time to do that. These meetings are priced affordably and scheduled flexibly so that it becomes the power boost you need when you need it.

In-Company Training

Last month I was in Macau, China conducting a seminar for a global client. Three weeks ago I was in San Diego and Atlanta for speeches and seminars. Next month I’ll be conducting Leadership Forums for thousands of people in Santiago, Chile and Bogota’, Colombia. Yet, I’m happiest when I can conduct the training here in the 101 Corridor.

Sure, I’d love to be the keynote speaker for your meeting in Acapulco or Rome, but I’m also thrilled to be able to drive across town and conduct training programs for you right here. Why pay the travel expenses to ship someone in from across the globe when you can access me or other world-class experts through the 101 Leaders Institute?

On Leadership, Sales, Presentation Skills, Communication or Marketing Strategies, Innovation, Customer Loyalty, Performance Improvement, or Entrepreneurship, we have a world-class faculty. All of our faculty are one or all of the following: Hall of Fame Professional Speakers “CPAEs”, bestselling Authors, or international experts in a particular discipline. Let us become your go-to resource for the top speakers and experts you need. When I’m bringing in one of our faculty for our events, let’s schedule an event for your organization while they are here! Many of you have hired these folks in the past without any of the cost saving benefits we can provide to you.

Online Video Training – 24/7

Many of you are already subscribers to iLearningGlobal.tv, or TSTN (The Success Training Network), or have been subscribers to Crestcom International, or The People’s Network -The Success Channel. These and other networks have offered my programs via television or internet connection. Now Savvy Media, Inc. out of Phoenix, is providing over 600 online video programs, each in a 6 to 10 minute format, so that you can access the best experts and their best advice via your laptop, iPad or cell phone anywhere in the world. Imagine having High Definition, instant access to specifically the training you need. This is like having each individual chapter of the best selling business books available via video of the author delivering it directly to you. What a great way to open a meeting or discussion with your coworkers!

My complete Relationship Intelligence® and Relationship Selling series of programs are on line in bite sized lessons.

Let me know if you’d like more details on this video series. It can be accessed via very affordable subscription so that you get all the resources and can navigate it as you wish. jim@101Leaders.com

Personal Coaching

When you need someone in your corner to guide you through a transition or show you the options please give me a call. One of the most satisfying things I’ve done over these decades of speaking and training is personal coaching. I can be your part time mentor and expert guide. If you need assistance or perspective in goal setting, achieving a breakthrough, getting your enthusiasm back, dealing with career challenges, rethinking your strategies, or just developing a growth plan, I’m your guy. This can also be offered for small teams in a series of casual sessions.

Special Events

There is no limit to what we could do under the 101 Leaders Alliance mix of events and services. As great ideas emerge and fun options are available, I’ll bring them to you. Please let us know what you’d like to see and if you have a special offer we’d love to hear of it. Sponsorships, discounted special offers, showcase opportunities, and more are there for you. If it furthers the purpose of advancing the leadership abilities of the 101 Corridor, then let us know.

At each of our events we have special give away drawings, and sponsorships, so if you’d like to support this cause and draw some attention to your firm, let us know.

Next Event! June 15, 2010 Seminar on: Relationship Intelligence® featuring Jim Cathcart.

Yep, I’m the next speaker! We have brought in seven national experts for you so far and I’ve been flying off to other places to conduct training there. Now it’s time for me to bring it home. I’ll be showing you the insights of my last several years of research into Professional Relationships. Building upon my published works of Relationship Strategies (with Tony Alessandra), The Acorn Principle (published by St. Martin’s Press) and Relationship Selling (my international bestseller), I’ve discovered how to convert connections into Assets as never before. With the use of Social Media, savvy networking, intentionality, and strategy you can find resources you didn’t realize you had. You can also eliminate many of the frustrations most people experience with relationships. Come join me on June 15th at the next 101 Prosperity Series seminar and let’s discover how you can get more from every relationship. This will be a daytime seminar at the Westlake Village Inn. Call or email now to confirm your spot for this event. jim@101leaders.com

Watch your email for news and please respond to our survey inquiries promptly. Thank you for supporting the 101 Leaders Alliance.
